Casa Amanancer B&B will be featuring their first Mercadito Amanecer (tiny market) selling high quality, locally produced food items. Please spread the word!

Following are some items that we are offering:

• Fresh goat milk products from local producer Mario Rojas*
- Milk, 900 grams at 1,100 colones
- Yogurt, 1 liter at 1,700 colones
- Fresh cheese, 1/2 kilo at 4,000 colones
• Organic coffee from our farm, freshly roasted and packaged (finely ground, medium roast)

They'll be serving up bocadillos (medium-sized portions) of:

• Fresh coffee or herbal tea 500 colones

Our intention is to do this small market every Saturday, depending on turnout, even expanding and offering more locally-produced products down the road, maybe even with local live musicians and artists.

Getting something formally published isn’t difficult; if you have the money there are many tools available to the modern writer. Opportunities for self-publishing abound via the many companies (vanity presses) who will print and bind just about anything one wishes to pay for. But it’s not cheap and rip-offs are plentiful.

Now, the new age of e-Publishing is providing a different opportunity for writers to reach an audience, but that too can become pricey. And, as in hard cover publishing, e-Publishing leaves it up to the author to find a market to which they can distribute their works.

Presenters will be L. Michael Rusin, author of the novel Avalon, George Farrell, author, and Allen Dickinson, a contributor to the Tico Times and other local outlets. The 4-hour session will consist of three short presentations, each followed by a Q&A, where the audience can ask questions and address their own particular concerns.

Take the Palmares exit off the main Pista and follow that street into town to the point you have to turn right or left. Turn RIGHT.

About 200 mts you will have to choose right or left again. Turn LEFT.

There's a Castration Clinic taking place in Sarchi on Sunday, February 5, from 8am to 2pm at the Agricultural Centre in Sarchi North. Cost is only Colones 8,000.

Note: There are 2 Sarchi numbers at the bottom of the poster. 2454 4067 and 2454 1171 . It's probably a good idea to call first to find out what the next step would be if your cat/dog became unwell post-op.

Directions (with Naranjo behind you): As you come into Sarchi you'll see the only gas station (on your left). Turn left just after the gas station. If you see Banco Nacional (BNCR) you'll be 1 block too far so turn around.

Directions (with Grecia behind you): You'll have passed many furniture stores and started going through downtown Sarchi. You'll eventually see Banco Nacional (BNCR) on your right. Turn right just after it (BEFORE the gas station).

Everyone: Once you've turned onto the road, you'll see white dotted lines in the road a bit like on a running track (I don't know why they're there). You should see a "SUR" sign up on the left
and you may also see a cute road sign, on the right, "Calle 2".

Again, cleaning up the yard, etc., is absolutely not an obligation; the dogs are, of course, more than happy to receive your love, be brushed and ear cleaning is always a job that takes a lot of time.

Over 150 dogs are soooooo looking forward to greeting you.

"Since I am on the committee for the 5th Annual Atenas Chili Cook Off (early reminder: please keep the Feb 12, 2012 date open) I decided to do a little research about chili.

I was surprised to learn something any true chili cook already knows: chili doesn’t have beans! I also learned that Chili peppers were native to the New World and were used centuries ago by the Indians of Central and South America.

Some people claim that chili, as we know it, originated in Mexico. That is possible, however, to Mexicans chili refers only to the spicy vegetable not to any particular dish. In 1737 an immigrant in Arizona first described a stew made with chili peppers, lard, and meat. Though it wasn’t until the mid 1800′s, when a San Antonio settler ground some dried spices and chili peppers, that a blended chili powder was created. This led to the spread of chili stew recipes across the southwest United States and onward.

There are many stories of how and why “chili con carne” became popular, but almost all agree Texas was the place of origin. There are stories of “chili queens” in San Antonio. These Mexican women were first hired to feed the military in San Antonio. Later, they became street vendors who arrived in the plazas in the evening with aromatic caldrons of chili to dish out.

Many stews like chili became the food of choice among the poor: they could stretch a small piece of meat with lots of chili peppers and disguise any bad taste or odor with the spicy seasonings.

There are theories that chili was served to jail inmates for the same reasons. There are records of chili con carne pemmican, in which meat, lard, and seasonings were pounded together into a concentrated food that could be taken on trail journeys.

By 1890 chili was being served in cafes in Texas. By 1893 chili made its big debut at the Chicago World’s Fair at the “San Antonio Chile Stand”. And the rest is history. Until… somewhere down that spicy road someone decided their chili was the best chili ever. And the chili wars began, but that’s another story."

An evening with The Dog Whisperer! (Sat, Jan 28)

Cesar Millan - The Dog Whisperer

This will be his first appearance in Latin America... at the Estadio Nacional in San José. Cesar is a world-renowned dog behavior specialist and co-creator and star of the popular television show “Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan,” which is aired in over 80 countries around the world. Note that Cesar’s performance will be in Spanish!

As soon as Action Alliance heard about his visit, it immediately negotiated an agreement with the promoter. A portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold will benefit local spay and neuter programs and dog rescue facilities such as Helene Wirt’s Dogland here in San Ramón. In addition, Action Alliance negotiated the right for Dogland and other groups around the country to be given the opportunity to sell tickets and retain a significant portion of the proceeds to support spay and neuter programs.

So…here’s what you can do to help locally:

If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, go to COOPENAE during operating hours, between now and close of business this coming Monday, January 23 and pay for your ticket. Here's the Seating Chart and COOPENAE have hard copies:

Tickets will then be available for pick-up beginning Thursday, January 26 and must be picked up by close of business on Friday, January 27. Note that each ticket you purchase will cover the cost to spay or neuter one dog!!!

Visit to a German sausage maker and buy authentic German sausages. Visit to a nut dealer - all kinds of nuts cheaper than Pricemart!

When: Friday, January 27. Meet at Cafe Delicias at 8.30am for the 40 minute drive to Atenas.

What: We will stop at the Nut House (pardon the expression) on the way to Kay's.

Then a great breakfast, or an equally great very early lunch off the menu, at Kay's. The lending library will be available for browsing and borrowing

Later, we will drive to the German sausage vendor... this is the same company that had the German restaurant in Atenas (sadly, now closed!), so a great opportunity to buy those wursts, brots, and perros caliente, etc., that we have all missed! The guys who Louise has told about this are already droolling over the thoughts of sausages!

US Embassy Workshops (via Action Alliance) - Jan 20

Here are a pair of workshops that the Community Action Alliance team have planned with the Consular Section of the US Embassy for Friday, January 20th.

The first workshop will target US Citizens and will cover Citizen Services offered by the consular staff including voter registration, passport renewals, and notary services. Embassy representatives will also address security concerns, take questions, and discuss their forthcoming American Citizen Services Newsletter.

The second workshop will target Costa Ricans and is intended to provide information regarding US Visa Applications. Many of you have come to us with questions raised by neighbors, friends and workers who have asked about visa requirements. In response to these inquiries we have asked and the Embassy has graciously agreed to present this special workshop. We appreciate your help in getting the word out to any Costa Ricans that may have questions about applying for a Visa to the US.

Anna Campagnale hopes everyone had a wonderful holiday season!! On Monday January 2nd @ 10am at Las Cabinas she will be commencing yoga practice. Come join her as we open up our bodies and minds to the wonders to come in this New Year. We will be letting go of the old and welcoming the new!! New Year brings with it so many opportunites to enrich our lives and increase our awareness so that we may navigate through our days with clarity and an abundance of love!!! So much to explore!!!

Vinyasa Flow is a form of yoga where movement is linked with breath as we move from one pose to the next. It is a more vigorous form of yoga as opposed to Yin Yoga. We will be flowing much like dancers do from pose to pose. Be prepared to sweat.
Yin Yoga is an extremely therapeutic form of yoga. Contrary to a more vigorous or yang form of yoga, where we mainly work the muscles of the body, Yin Yoga addresses the Yin parts of the body. Specifically, it targets the connective tissue (the ligaments and tendons in the joints and spine). The benefits of Yin Yoga are numerous. It increases range of motion and flexibility, cultivates patience, acceptance and peace, and puts the body in a deep state of meditation where healing occurs. Yin Yoga is a wonderful way to experience pain relief and obtain/maintain a sense of well being.

The asanas or poses are all done lying or sitting on the mat and held for a mininum of 3 - 5 minutes. This allows for the release of the muscles, giving us access to the fascia, ligaments, tendons & joints. These yin body parts are less elastic and therefore require more time to lengthen.

Orphanages - Christmas event - Dec 23

Emerald Forest Properties took on on three of the local orphanages totaling 54 children, to host at their San Carlos farm Friday, December 23 starting at 10.30am.

If you'd like to make a contribution, money won't be accepted but, if you would like to send baked goods, candies or Christmas foods, these will be graciously received (only tangible items please).

Tom and Susan Ackley, AKA Mr. and Mrs. Santa, will be on hand the day of the event to hand out gifts and after all that sugar, tooth brushes!

Writers Workshop: How to Get Published

Thanks to our friends at A.M. Costa Rica it has come to our attention that the Atenas and Escazú Writers Groups will be hosting a special workshop on How to Get Published on Wednesday, December 14 beginning at 1:00 pm at the First International Baptist Church in Escazú (the big church across the Autopista from Multiplaza Mall).

The workshop will include three presenters including Fred Holmes, the author of “A Trial by Fire and Ice”. There will also be a Panel Discussion with a Q&A session featuring three published authors. A.M. Costa Rica columnist Jo Stuart will also be in attendance.

The organizers are requesting a 2,000 colones donation for those who attend. We know there are a lot of you out there who are writers or aspiring writers and this is a fabulous opportunity to get some very tangible tips on how to get published.

Our friends at PROPAZ are once again coordinating a Toy Swap at which children will bring their toy guns and other toys symbolic of violence and exchange them for ‘non-violent’ toys. In 2010 members of the Action Alliance donated over 100 toys representing the single largest donation by any group in San Ramón.

Please help us in supporting this worthwhile organization by dropping off toys at the Rancho at El Castillo de Relajamiento (aka The Cabinas) deadline extended to Dec 5. Note that PROPAZ will exchange the toys during the Municipality’s Christmas Celebration in the Central Park (details to be available on the Action Alliance website).

The first First Friday Dog Day (Dog Wash Day) was a great success. There were 11 of us, 4 guys, which was great since they handled most of the hose work! We washed, dried and brushed about 30 dogs (no one was counting!). Many got their ears cleaned by our own "Staff Veterinarian" Lisa Gellock (as well as some nails trimmed).

Some pooches knew a good thing when it happened and refused to leave warm snuggly laps... and most of the laps didn't want them to leave either! Helene Wirt, the wonderful warm heart behind Dogland, couldn't say thank you enough, but we all felt we should be thanking her for the opportunity. A great time was had by all!

Each month, on the first Friday, we are planning to go to Dogland. The plan at this time is to spend alternate visits washing, and loving. If other needs arrive that we can help with, those activities will be added. So, as October had Dog Wash Day, November will have Dog Loving Day.

Most of the volunteers arrived with supplies of dog shampoos, ear cleaner, dog food, and towels, others who could not attend sent more supplies, as well as cash donations. Helene says it costs her about $4000.00 a month to run this rescue operation. Needless to say any and all donations are most welcome.

Mario delivers the products to his buyers every Friday (like the ‘old days’ with the milk man except with goat products) and it occurred to him that others may be interested in switching from cow to goat products. Mike did some light research on the internet and discovered that there are many health benefits to goat products including easier digestion than cow products. He also read that seventy-two percent of the milk used throughout the world is from goats. Chris has been kind enough to set up a sampling of Mario’s goat products at the rancho at the cabinas . Anyone interested in purchasing his products can. Following is the pricing:

The Program:

Yin Yoga is an extremely therapeutic form of yoga. Contrary to a more vigorous or yang form of yoga, where we mainly work the muscles of the body, Yin Yoga addresses the Yin parts of the body. Specifically, it targets the connective tissue (the ligaments and tendons in the joints and spine). The benefits of Yin Yoga are numerous. It increases range of motion and flexibility, cultivates patience, acceptance and peace, and puts the body in a deep state of meditation where healing occurs. Yin Yoga is a wonderful way to experience pain relief and obtain/maintain a sense of well being.

The asanas or poses are all done lying or sitting on the mat and held for a mininum of 3 - 5 minutes. This allows for the release of the muscles, giving us access to the fascia, ligaments, tendons & joints. These yin body parts are less elastic and therefore require more time to lenghten.

Directions: Main Street In past mall, through intersection where there used to be a traffic light (how's that for Costa Rica-type directions!), go to the second stop sign, make a left and continue a few blocks, big bus station on right, park anywhere on street.

The Schedule: Get off the bus right at Sabana Park, leisurely stroll through the art museum (IT'S FREE!), then walk a couple of blocks to Rosti Pollos, for the uninitiated, that's fabulous roasted chicken, big menu, reasonable prices, then share a cab back to the Directo Bus Station in SJ (about 2500 c total) and ride the bus back to San Ramon. We're anticipating being back around 3:30 pm.

The Sweetest Project! Can You Help?

Our friend Brad Butler from San Carlos has given us some information about a great project for a group of girls in an orphanage there...the director, Alexandra Mora, is, of course, twarted by underfunding just like our local orphanage here, in Santiago.

That being said, Directora Mora has a wonderful vision for the girls who range in age from 10-17, most of whom come from abusive family backgrounds. She is starting a bakery so that the girls will learn an important trade that will serve them well as they become adults. The bakery is being built now, at the front of the orphanage, thanks to some really nice folks. We can help too! Brad and his mom Donna and her friend Jo Lyn have visited with us at our Thursday Coffee at Cafe D, and they all say that San Ramon Gringos are the best! So if you are in spring cleaning mode, The Sweetest Project really needs:

Baking pans, tins and sheets, mixing bowls, storage containers, utensils of any kind, hand or electric mixers, dishes of any size or number (matching items not necessary!), cups, glasses, anything remotely having to do with cooking or baking or serving very much appreciated

Towels, cleaning rags, buckets, brooms, mops or anything for cleaning

Cash register or money box, calculators, pencils, pens, paper, notebooks or anything for keeping records

House paint, brushes, trays, rollers or ART SUPPLIES as some of the girls have made a mural for their house and would like to do the same for the bakery; curtains, material, decorative items, or anything you think the girls could use for the bakery or for their life at the orphanage.

Expect: This is a moderately challenging walk for about two miles through the woods with some climbing near a river. Bring your walking stick, water bottle,binoculars/camera, wear closed-toe walking shoes with rubber-type soles, and bug spray to be used at the parking area before the walk. Long pants/sleeves are suggested. Don't forget to bring your Quiet Voice as the birds are happiest when undisturbed!

Save your used dryer sheets, Bounce or other brands are fine! Karen willl use them as a base for the squares of the quilt.
Donate leftover cloth from other projects.
Come to Cafe Delicious this Thursday, 2/24 at 10 am, and learn how to make a small square for the quilt if you are so inclined!

Directions: Main Street In from Mall, through first traffic light, then at first stop sign make a left. Go about six blocks (heading west), past Red Cross on left, then look for green awnings of Cafe D on the far left corner.

Expect: Coffee, pastries and breakfast available. Bring up to five books you don't need returned for exchange and go home with five you haven't read yet!

A couple of weeks ago, a few of us had to visit the American Embassy, and did we discover -- quite by accident! -- a wonderful block of shopping and the best Italian Restaurant ever in San Jose! If you are looking for a holiday treat for yourself, come along!

Meet Up: 8 am at the Directo Bus Station in San Ramon in time for the 8:30 bus. Buy two bus tickets, one for the trip and one for the return (2,280 c total). This avoids lines in the SJ station.

Agenda: Visit Innovarte Design, a store which features modern wall art and furnishings with good prices; Mata Hari, a purveyor of East Indian and Indonesian furniture, lamps, decorative items; and La Artistica which is, well, just the biggest home furnishing store in Central America! Lunch: Il Padrino Restaurante (menu at http://ilpadrinocr.com/ ) where the food was so good we almost cried at lunch, but we were having too much fun. You can have an excellent lunch for less than 10,000 c, but you can spend lots more with appetizers and wine, so be an informed consumer!

Special Note: Gentlemen are welcome, but they must pledge to be good shoppers, NO WHINING! We are going to look and look and look and look and maybe buy something, and look some more...

Expect: A one-hour bus ride to SJ, taxi to Rohrmoser (shared, about 3,000 c), walking in stores and in a five-block area, shared taxi back to Directo Bus Station (about the same cost) and arrive back in San Ramon about 4:30 pm.

Come out to support the kids in Mike and Earl's art class at the Magallanes Elementary School! There's nothing like the oohs and ahhs of an audience to boost their confidence, and you sure will have a good time with all the smiles! Oh, and Santa will be there too!

Place: Magallanes Elementary School

Directions: Take the autopista west from San Ramon, pass the Windmill Restaurant on your left and keep an eye to the right for the next right-turn on a paved road. There is a soda on the near corner and a house that looks like a castle on the far corner, up high. Continue about 1/2 mile until you see the school on the left.

Expect: Lots of art created by the students on display, cake and fun!!! Come spend an hour -- it's a good and easy way to give back to the local community!

As a benefit for the computer program at the Felix Angel Salas School in Los Angeles Sur, Joe Anello invites everyone to attend a Christmas International Food Festival! Here are the details:

Date: Sunday, December 12, 2010
Time: 10 am until approximately 2 pm
Place: Salon Comunal, adjacent to the Church in Los Angeles Sur
Directions: From Maxi-Bodega continue north until you see the beige San Juan church in front of you; make a left toward La Fortuna (just in front of the church) and continue approximately six miles until you see the Los Angeles Sur Church on your right.
Expect: Lots of Tico Food prepared by parents, international foods prepared by the Gringo community, music (10 am - Tico band, 12 noon - Joe Anello Jazz Quartet, then the Krazy 8 rock band). You can get food to go if you bring your own tupperware containers.
Auction: 12:30 pm, Dinner at Vista Del Valle, Dinner at Mi Rancho, other items
